How to setup OpenVPN on OpenWRT Router using NetSequre firmware

How do we setup VPN on NetSequre (your OpenWRT router)?
Here are simple 5 steps to get to get it right.

Step#1 – Identify your router and check for supported NetSequre firmware
Here is a list of 100+ routers supported by NetSequre. The ones that are high-end model can support VPN. Please check for ‘NetSequre – Total Internet Security’ for your router.

Step #2 – Download and Install NetSequre firmware for your router

Once you identified that your router is supported by NetSequre, download the firmware. Ensure correctness of router brand, model, and hardware version before you install the firmware.

On successful installation, the router will reboot and start ‘NetSequre_Setup_xxxx” Wi-Fi network for you to configure it for Wi-Fi names and WAN settings. Provide your email for creating an account on our backend for cloud management & subscription.

Step#3 – Sign up with any VPN vendor which supports OpenVPN

OpenVPN is arguably one of the best VPN technology. All major VPN vendors do support OpenVPN. You need to sign up for free/trial/paid VPN subscription from your choice of VPN vendor and download a *.ovpn file that they provide.

*.ovpn file is now a standard for importing your VPN settings into your machine/device. All VPN vendors supporting OpenVPN should also be providing you *.ovpn file. It’s a simple text file with all required certificates, keys and server configuration that an OpenVPN client app needs.

Login to routers web-console and import *.ovpn file. If there is username/password required then key-in the details. Enable VPN and click ‘Start’. That’s it!

Step #5 – Verify you are connected to VPN
Once VPN service gets started, visit and check your public IP and address. You should see the location as per your VPN server.
